About Me

This research is a gift to my family and in honor of my beloved father, John Marshall West, born 1922 in Halifax County, North Carolina and died 1989 in Baltimore, Maryland. His American ancestry traces to the Chesapeake Bay Area during the 1600s: The earliest known ancestors lived along the waterways and tributaries of Virginia and Maryland.

Following the American Revolution three West brothers traveled from Maryland to South Carolina. Our great great-grandfather, William Joseph West, Sr. was born March 3, 1837, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He moved south into Georgia during the 1850s. By 1860 he was in Atlanta and on August 19, 1861, at age 24 he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 21st Regt. Georgia Infantry, Army of Virginia. He was appointed sergeant in 1862 and promoted from the ranks to Junior Second Lieutenant in 1863. He served through the end of the war and afterward settled in Augusta, where he died shortly thereafter. His son William Joseph West, Jr. was born June 26, 1867, in Augusta: He married Margaret Anna "Annie" Thurmond from Edgefield, South Carolina (A descendant of William Randolph and Mary Isham of Turkey Island, Virginia). William and Annie West lived in Augusta for several years, and after moving a number of times, settled in Alamance County, North Carolina (just south of Burlington). Their son Roy Bertram Curtis West, our grandfather, was born in Augusta and died in Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Father was born in North Carolina, and lived there until 1942 when he entered Merchant Marines and served during WW II. It was during this time he met our mother in Baltimore, Maryland. Toward the end of the war, she and her family returned to their home in Southern Ohio. Following discharge, father followed her to Ohio and they married in 1946. mwr July 20, 2010 (Revised)
